Things to Do in Birmingham This Autumn 2026

Autumn in Birmingham is not just heritage tours and Christmas markets. It can be, if you let the first events page you open make all your decisions. But the better version of the city is louder, messier and much more useful if you are actually trying to make a plan with someone.

Digbeth nights. Comedy. Cocktail routes. Film screenings. Queer performance. Halloween chaos. Food, music, late openings, light trails and the kind of events where you do not have to sit opposite someone for two hours pretending “so, what do you do?” is a personality test.

This guide is for that version of Birmingham.

Not every event here is a perfect first date. Some are better for friends. Some are better when you already know the other person wants a night out. Some are only here because they give you a specific reason to leave the house, which is honestly half the battle.

Bfriendz is built around that idea: real plans, not vague “we should do something” chat. Pick one thing. Invite one person. Keep it simple enough that saying yes does not feel like admin.

Start here if you want the safest plan

If you want something easy and social, start with Digbeth First Friday. It has exhibitions, late openings, music, street food and enough movement that the plan does not die if one room is awkward.

If you want a night out that does not pretend to be calm, choose Bongo’s Bingo at Forum Digbeth. It is bingo in the same way a karaoke night is “just singing”: technically true, emotionally not.

If you want something funny without building the whole evening around drinks, Birmingham Comedy Festival is the obvious October pick.

If you want something a bit less predictable, Fierce Festival or Birmingham Drag and Burlesque Festival are much more interesting than ending up in another bar. Later in the autumn, there’s plenty of seasonal stuff too: Halloween events around Digbeth, Festival of the Dead, Luminate at Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the two Christmas markets in the city centre.

If that all feels like a lot for a first meet, low-pressure first date ideas or first friend date ideas are probably a better place to start. Not every first meet needs smoke machines.

September events in Birmingham 2026

Moseley Folk & Arts Festival

When: 4–6 September 2026

Where: Moseley Park

Moseley Folk is a proper weekend plan, not a casual “shall we meet for 45 minutes?” plan. Use it when the other person is genuinely up for music, crowds, grass, food stalls and spending more than one hour together.

The good version is to go for part of the day, not to accidentally propose a full festival relationship contract. Catch a couple of acts, get some food, and leave when you’ve had enough.

For a date, it works if the music taste already lines up. For friends, it is easier: “I’m going on Saturday afternoon, want to join?” feels casual enough.

Bongo’s Bingo at Forum Digbeth

When: Saturdays through autumn 2026; daytime and selected evening shows

Where: Forum Digbeth, 68A Glover Street

Bongo’s Bingo is not quiet. It is not subtle. It is also not pretending to be.

That makes it a good plan when you want a night with actual energy: dancing, audience chaos, prizes, music, shouting, the kind of thing people either immediately understand or should not be invited to.

I would not use it for a delicate first date where you are still trying to learn basic facts about each other. But for friends, a group plan, a second date, or someone whose messages already have a bit of chaos in them, it is much better than another “maybe drinks?” thread that never becomes real.

Birmingham Heritage Week

When: 11–20 September 2026

Where: venues across Birmingham

Heritage Week can sound older than it needs to. The useful version is not “let’s learn respectfully about municipal history for three hours”. It is one hidden building, one strange city walk, one tunnel, one place you have passed a hundred times and never entered.

That can work really well for a low-pressure meet. You have something to look at. You can leave after one stop. You can get coffee after if the conversation is alive.

The mistake is turning it into a full educational itinerary. One thing is a plan. Five things is coursework.

For something more date-coded around the city, pair it with first date ideas in Birmingham and keep the invite short.

EVERY THING MUST GO by Joe Lycett

When: open through autumn 2026, until 21 February 2027

Where: Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

Joe Lycett at BMAG is a much better gallery plan than the word “gallery” usually suggests. It is funny, local, weird enough to talk about, and not so serious that you need to walk around whispering like you are being assessed.

That makes it useful for meeting someone new. You can go for half an hour, react to the work, then move on. If the chat is good, you are in the city centre. If it is not, at least the plan had a point. It is a good option when you want something casual but not lazy.

Digbeth Jazz at The Night Owl

When: every Tuesday, 7.30pm–midnight

Where: The Night Owl, 17–18 Lower Trinity Street

Digbeth Jazz is a better recurring plan than a lot of one-off events because you can go without making it a huge occasion. It is weekly, affordable, and in the right part of town if the night ends up becoming bigger than planned.

For a first meet, arrive early and do not rely on the music to do all the social work. For friends, it is easy: “jazz at The Night Owl on Tuesday?” is specific enough, but not dramatic.

It also gives Birmingham a bit more texture than the usual “bar, restaurant, cinema” loop.

October events in Birmingham 2026

Birmingham Comedy Festival

When: 2–11 October 2026

Where: venues across Birmingham

Comedy is a good autumn plan because it tells you something quickly. Not everything. But enough.

Birmingham Comedy Festival has loads on, so it’s worth looking past the obvious headliners. If you’re going with someone you’ve only just met, an earlier show or a mixed bill is probably a better shout than committing to a huge night. You want the show to give the evening shape, not swallow the whole night.

Meet before. That matters. If your first actual conversation is outside the venue at the end, surrounded by people checking trains, you have made the plan harder than necessary.

Birmingham Literature Festival

When: 8–12 October 2026

Where: Birmingham Rep and other Birmingham venues

This is not the main “under 40” pick, but it stays because the right event can be a good plan. Especially if the person likes books, essays, podcasts, politics, poetry, culture or having an actual topic to talk about afterwards.

Do not sell it like a worthy evening. Don’t turn it into a whole itinerary. Pick one thing you both actually want to see, and keep everything else loose.

If the invite is the hard part, how to ask a new friend to hang out has better wording than “shall we attend a literary event together”, which is a sentence no one should have to send.

Fierce Festival

When: mid-October 2026; check the programme for individual show times

Where: venues across Birmingham

Fierce is for people who would rather risk a strange night than have another safe one. It is performance, dance, live art, parties, politics, bodies, noise, confusion, brilliance, maybe all of those in the same hour. This is not a neutral plan. That is why it belongs here.

Use it if the other person is up for something unusual. Do not use it if you are trying to look normal. Pick one show. Leave space after for “what did we just watch?” because that may be the best part.

Birmingham Cocktail Weekend: Winter Edition

When: 22–25 October 2026

Where: participating bars across Birmingham

Birmingham Cocktail Weekend is still drinks, but at least it gives drinks a route. That is useful.

It is better for friends or a confident date than a fragile first meet. If you do use it for someone new, keep the plan tight: two venues, maybe food, done. The city does not need you to complete every cocktail on the map like it is a civic duty.

The real advantage is movement. You are not stuck in one bar wondering whether to order a second round because nobody knows what happens next.

Festival of the Dead at Utilita Arena

When: 23 October 2026

Where: Utilita Arena Birmingham

Festival of the Dead is a big Halloween-season night, not a soft little meet-up. Think costumes, production, arena energy, and a crowd that has not come out for a quiet chat about work-life balance.

That is exactly why it can work for the right group. It is dramatic, visual and already has a reason to exist. No one needs to pretend they are just popping out casually.

For a first date, only choose it if the vibe is already loud. For friends, it is easier. The plan is the spectacle.

Halloween in Birmingham

When: late October 2026; dates vary by event

Where: venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands

Halloween is not one event. It is a dangerous category. Some Birmingham Halloween plans will be brilliant. Some will be a normal club night with fake cobwebs and a booking fee. The move is to pick a specific thing: a horror screening, a Digbeth party, a drag night, a scare maze, a themed gig, a bar route that actually sounds fun.

For meeting someone new, avoid anything that traps you for hours. For a group, go louder. The invite should not be “Halloween?” It should be one real plan.

November events in Birmingham 2026

Birmingham Drag and Burlesque Festival

When: 5–8 November 2026

Where: The Old Joint Stock Theatre, The Old Rep Theatre, Eden Bar and other festival venues

This is much closer to the Bfriendz audience than a polite gift fair. It has performance, cabaret, drag, burlesque, comedy, panels, after-party energy and enough personality to stop the night feeling generic.

It is not the quietest first-date plan. Good. Not everything has to be. Choose it when the other person is clearly up for spectacle, camp, queer nightlife, performance or a night with actual edges. For a group of friends, it is one of the strongest November options.

Birmingham Film Festival

When: 6–15 November 2026

Where: Millennium Point, Omniplex Rubery, Royal Cinema Sutton Coldfield and Eastside Rooms

Birmingham Film Festival is a better indoor plan than a normal cinema trip because the film is not just filler. You are going to something with a bit more intent, and there is usually more to talk about after.

For a first meet, choose the screening carefully and meet before. The film should support the plan, not replace the whole conversation.

This is one of the safest November options if the weather is awful and you still want something more interesting than “pub?”

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

When: 5 November–24 December 2026

Where: Victoria Square and New Street

The Frankfurt Christmas Market is big, central and impossible to ignore. It is also not automatically a good plan.

For under-40s, the good version is quick and specific: meet somewhere clear, get one drink or snack, do one loop, then escape before the crowd turns the whole thing into a slow-moving queue with fairy lights.

Do not make it the whole evening unless everyone actively wants that. Use it as a starting point, then move to a quieter bar, a cinema, Cathedral Square or somewhere around Colmore Row.

Christmas in Cathedral Square

When: 5 November–24 December 2026

Where: Cathedral Square

Christmas in Cathedral Square is the easier market plan. Smaller, more independent, less “why are there this many people near a sausage stall?”

It’s easy enough for a date or a new-friend hangout: have a look around, grab something warm, and head off whenever you feel like it. It also pairs better with a city-centre coffee or bar afterwards than the full Frankfurt Market crush.

This is probably the better first-meet version of festive Birmingham.

Luminate at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

When: 28 November 2026–2 January 2027; timed entry from 4.30pm

Where: Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Luminate is the cleanest late-autumn walking plan in Birmingham. It is seasonal, visual and easy to understand. You walk the trail, react to things, and decide afterwards whether to continue the evening.

It is not spontaneous. You need to book. It is also outdoors, so do not choose it on a night when the weather looks personally offended.

But as a date or friend plan, it has a good shape. Much better than sitting somewhere too bright trying to make eye contact like a normal person.

What to choose if you are meeting someone new

For a first date, I would pick Joe Lycett at BMAG, Birmingham Comedy Festival, Birmingham Film Festival, Christmas in Cathedral Square, Luminate, or one small part of Digbeth First Friday.

For a first friend hangout, I would pick Digbeth First Friday, Digbeth Jazz, Bongo’s Bingo, Birmingham Cocktail Weekend, Birmingham Drag and Burlesque Festival, or Halloween in Digbeth if the person seems up for it.

For a proper night out, go for Festival of the Dead, Fierce, Bongo’s Bingo, Cocktail Weekend, the Drag and Burlesque Festival, or a late Digbeth plan.

For a calmer plan, use Heritage Week, Joe Lycett at BMAG, Birmingham Film Festival, Christmas in Cathedral Square or Luminate.

That is the real filter. The better question is whether it suits the person you’re going with and how well you know each other. If you’ve only just started talking, keep it simple. If you already know you get on, you can pick something busier or more involved.

If you need something softer than an event, start with low-pressure first date ideas. If it is more of a friend hangout, use first friend date ideas. And if someone gives you the classic vague line — “we should hang out sometime” — turn it into something real with what to say when someone says we should hang out sometime.
