Things to Do in Bristol This Autumn 2026: Festivals, Gigs and Halloween

Bristol gets very easy to make plans in autumn. September brings film festivals, cocktails and late-night art. October gets photography, horror, Halloween and some of the best indoor events of the season. By November, the city has moved into gigs, Bonfire Night and Christmas markets without quite admitting that winter has started.

The problem is not finding things to do in Bristol this autumn. It is working out which events are actually worth leaving the house for.

So this is not a giant calendar of everything happening between September and November 2026. This is a shortlist of Bristol autumn events that are actually worth making plans around, whether you’re going with a date, someone you’ve only recently met or a few friends.

If you are meeting someone you barely know, do not automatically choose the biggest event. A gallery, film screening or one small festival stop is often easier than committing to six hours together. These low-pressure things to do with a new friend use the same rule.

September events in Bristol 2026

Encounters Film Festival

When: 23–27 September 2026
Where: venues across Bristol
Best for: film people, creative dates, something different after work

Encounters is a good one if you want more choice than just picking whatever’s on at the cinema. This year’s programme mixes short films, animation and documentaries with talks, parties and other events. The competition alone has 142 films from 39 countries, including 71 premieres.

You don’t need to make sense of the whole programme. Just pick one screening that sounds good. Pick one screening or one event. Meet beforehand. Then decide afterwards whether you want a drink or whether everyone is perfectly happy going home.

One particularly Bristol-specific title in the programme is Why You Shouldn’t Date In Bristol, which feels almost suspiciously relevant to this article.

Good first-date version: one short-film programme + one drink afterwards.

Bristol Cocktail Weekend

When: 24–27 September 2026
Where: more than 30 venues around Bristol
Best for: friends, dates where drinks are already the plan, small groups

For four days, bars across Bristol put on £7 signature cocktails and £6 alcohol-free versions. There are food deals too, plus tastings, cocktail-making sessions, live music and a few one-off events.

The bad version is deciding you need to visit twelve bars because you bought a wristband. Do two. Three if everyone is still making good decisions. For a first meet, choose one participating bar and leave the rest optional. For a group of friends, turning it into a mini route makes much more sense.

Wake the Tiger After Hours

When: selected Fridays through autumn, including 25 September, 9 and 23 October, 6 and 20 November
Where: Wake the Tiger
Best for: unusual Bristol date nights, friends, rainy evenings

Wake the Tiger is much more useful for adults once the children have gone home. The 18+ After Hours nights let you do the full immersive experience with the Junktion bar open as well. This autumn, they’re running on 25 September, 9 and 23 October, and 6 and 20 November.

This is a stronger date plan than a normal immersive attraction because you are not just walking around looking at things in silence. There is enough weirdness to give you something to react to, and enough space to move around when the conversation needs help. Best for: someone you already know is up for something playful.

Beverly Buchanan: Weathering at Spike Island

When: 26 September 2026–31 January 2027
Where: Spike Island
Price: free
Best for: free things to do in Bristol, art dates, rainy afternoons

Spike Island's autumn exhibition is the first European survey of American artist Beverly Buchanan. Weathering brings together five decades of sculpture, painting, drawing, earthworks and archival material. Entry is free. That makes it one of the easiest free things to do in Bristol this autumn.

It is also much better for meeting someone new than deciding you both need to spend an entire afternoon doing culture. Go in. Look around. Get coffee. If the weather holds, have a walk around the harbour while you’re there. The opening night on 25 September is free too, running from 6pm to 11pm. You don’t have to book, but it’s probably worth doing.

October events in Bristol 2026

October is busy in Bristol. There’s a big photography festival, a free photobook weekend, Halloween club nights, a scream park and museums staying open late. If you’re looking for something to do this month, these are the ones to start with.

FEAR at Avon Valley Scream Park

When: selected dates from 9–31 October 2026
Where: Avon Valley Adventure Park
Best for: Halloween, groups, dates where both people actually like being scared

FEAR is the big Bristol Halloween 2026 option. The scream park returns with five scare mazes, fairground rides, live shows, fire, lasers, themed food and hidden bars. There is also an AtmosFEAR option if you want the Halloween setting without committing to every maze.

This is not a 45-minute first coffee. You are travelling out of central Bristol, buying tickets and agreeing to spend actual time together. That makes it much better for friends, established dates or someone who has already enthusiastically responded to the words “scare maze”. If they replied “haha maybe”, do something else.

Bristol Photo Festival 2026: Time Machine

When: opening week 14–18 October; exhibitions continue to 15 November and beyond
Where: venues across Bristol
Best for: art, photography, free and low-cost plans, rainy days

This is probably the cultural event I would prioritise most strongly in October. Bristol Photo Festival is back for its third edition, this year under the title Time Machine. You’ll find exhibitions all over the city, including at Arnolfini, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Redcliffe Caves, Martin Parr Foundation and Albion Dockside. The main opening week is 14 to 18 October, but plenty of the shows carry on into November and beyond.

The programme is unusually strong. There is Joy Gregory at Arnolfini, Sheida Soleimani and Akshay Mahajan at Bristol Museum, work connected to Gaza's Photo Kegham archive at Albion Dockside, and No Pasarán inside Redcliffe Caves.

Do not try to complete the festival. Pick one exhibition and one nearby second stop. That makes it much more useful as an autumn date idea in Bristol or a first hangout than treating contemporary photography like a city-wide endurance sport.

BOP Photobook Festival

When: 17–18 October 2026
Where: Paintworks and Martin Parr Foundation
Entry: free; talks £4–£6
Best for: photographers, design people, browsing without a fixed schedule

BOP is one of the best cheap weekend plans in this guide. The annual festival brings photobook publishers, photographers and booksellers from across the UK and Europe to Paintworks. There are exhibitions, signings, workshops, street food, coffee, beer and a programme of artist talks. Festival entry itself is free. This is especially easy with a new friend because you do not need a strict start or finish.

Meet there. Browse. Pick up a book you absolutely did not budget for. Get coffee. Leave. BOP also overlaps with Bristol Photo Festival's opening week, so 17–18 October is probably the strongest art weekend in Bristol this autumn.

The Secret Life of Colour and late openings

When: exhibition from 24 October 2026; first late on 29 October
Where: Bristol Museum & Art Gallery
Price: exhibition £8 adults; Lates from £12 early bird
Best for: rainy dates, after-work plans, art without a silent-gallery atmosphere

The Secret Life of Colour combines art, science and natural history, with work by names including Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley, Kandinsky, Hokusai and Peter Blake. Adult exhibition tickets are £8. The better date-night version is the Lates programme.

From 29 October, selected evenings add DJs, projection mapping, drinks and a sip-and-sketch setup between 6pm and 9pm. That makes it one of the strongest answers to: What can you do in Bristol at night when it is raining? You have a fixed thing to see, but you can still talk and move around.

Halloween at Thekla

When: several nights around Halloween; Y2K-POCALYPSE on 31 October
Where: Thekla
Best for: club nights, groups

Bristol nightlife is not exactly waiting for Halloween to become chaotic, but Thekla has a particularly dense week. Its October schedule includes ABBAWEEN on 27 October, an it girls Halloween special on 28 October, Charlie Tee's UNITEE on 30 October and Y2K-POCALYPSE on 31 October.

Y2K-POCALYPSE is a 4pm–10pm day party with two rooms covering 2000s emo, pop-punk, pop, R&B and dance. Tickets are currently £7. This is not where you take someone because you want to discover their views on long-term relationships. It is where you discover whether they know the words to Paramore.

November events in Bristol 2026

Bristol Bonfire Night and fireworks

When: around 5 November 2026
Where: locations across Bristol and the surrounding area
Best for: cheap seasonal plans, groups, established dates

Bonfire Night falls on Thursday 5 November in 2026. Current options include watching fireworks across the city from Clifton Observatory or going to organised displays such as Avon Valley. Canford Park's Bristol Fireworks Fiesta follows on Saturday 7 November, with gates from 5.30pm and the main display at 7pm.

The useful thing about Bonfire Night is that you do not need to invent much of a plan. Meet somewhere. Get something warm. Watch fireworks. Decide whether you want a second stop. Do check the actual display rather than turning up at Clifton Suspension Bridge. The bridge itself does not host a Bonfire Night fireworks display.

Simple Things Festival

When: Saturday 7 November 2026
Where: Bristol Beacon, Strange Brew, Rough Trade, Sportsmans and Shredenhams
Tickets: currently £67.50–£77.50 including booking fee
Best for: music people, groups, a proper all-day plan

Simple Things is the strongest Bristol music festival in autumn 2026. The multi-venue festival returns for its twelfth edition, taking over Bristol Beacon, Strange Brew, Rough Trade, Sportsmans and Shredenhams with alternative, electronic, experimental, indie, dance and post-punk music. This is a real commitment.

Do not send someone you've met once: “Fancy a £70 multi-venue experimental music festival?” Unless you already know the answer is yes. For a group or somebody with overlapping music taste, though, it is one of the best proper nights out of the season.

Bristol Christmas Market

When: 6 November–23 December 2026
Where: Broadmead, Bristol Shopping Quarter
Best for: easy city-centre plans, after work, late-November dates

Yes, Christmas starts while this is technically still an autumn guide. Bristol Christmas Market is back in Broadmead from 6 November to 23 December. There are more than 40 stalls, plus food, festive drinks, entertainment and a few bar areas. It’s currently listed as open from 10am to 10pm every day.

The right way to use a Christmas market on a date is not to spend three hours slowly moving between identical stalls. Meet. Do one loop. Get one thing. Then move somewhere else. Because it is central, it works particularly well as a starting point rather than the entire evening.

St Nick's Christmas Market

When: 20 November–24 December 2026
Where: Corn Street and Wine Street
Best for: independent stalls, food, daytime weekend plans

If Broadmead feels too generic, St Nick's is the more Bristol-specific option. Bristol City Council has confirmed outdoor Christmas trading from 20 November to 24 December 2026, with wooden chalets on Corn Street and additional market pitches around Corn Street and Wine Street.

It is better for a Saturday afternoon than a massive night out. Browse the market, get food, then carry on through the Old City if you still have things to say to each other.

Best free and cheap things to do in Bristol this autumn

Not every autumn plan needs a £70 festival ticket. For a cheaper Bristol autumn:

• Beverly Buchanan at Spike Island: free

• BOP Photobook Festival: free entry

• Bristol Photo Festival: choose one of the gallery exhibitions rather than attempting the whole programme

• Bonfire Night: some community displays are free or donation-based

• St Nick's Christmas Market: browse without committing to a paid activity

Best things to do in Bristol when it rains this autumn

Bristol in October does occasionally discover rain. Fortunately, some of the strongest events here are indoors.

For art: Spike Island or Bristol Photo Festival.

For a date night: The Secret Life of Colour Late.

For films: Encounters.

For something playful: Wake the Tiger After Hours.

For music: Simple Things or a Thekla night.

For browsing: BOP.

That gives you much better options than pretending a two-hour Harbourside walk still sounds charming in horizontal rain.

If you have never met before, I would start smaller.

Safest: Spike Island
Good if you both like films: Encounters
Good if you want an activity: Wake the Tiger After Hours
Good for walking around rather than sitting opposite each other: BOP or Bristol Photo Festival
Good later in autumn: St Nick's Christmas Market

I would save FEAR, Simple Things and a full Bristol Cocktail Weekend route for somebody you already know a little. A first meet needs enough structure to stop it feeling awkward, but not so much structure that leaving requires an emergency evacuation plan.

Best Bristol autumn events for new friends

Events are particularly useful when you are trying to turn somebody you vaguely know into somebody you actually see. For an easy first friend plan, try BOP, Bristol Photo Festival, Spike Island or a Christmas market.

For something more social, try Cocktail Weekend, a museum Late or Wake the Tiger. For a group, Simple Things, FEAR or a Thekla night makes more sense.
