Rainy-Day First Date Ideas in London: Indoor Plans That Actually Work

Rain on a first date in London is annoying. It is not actually a reason to cancel. The trick is choosing somewhere that is properly indoors, gives you something to talk about and does not trap you together for four hours.

A huge museum can be too much. Dinner can feel too formal. And “let's just find a pub” is how a plan becomes two people scrolling Google Maps under the same umbrella.

A better rainy-day first date is usually one small exhibition, one game, one film or one genuinely interesting indoor place.

If you barely know each other, I'd prioritise free or short over impressive. A 45-minute plan that can become coffee is much easier than booking an entire evening.

1. Go behind the scenes at V&A East Storehouse

This is the strongest update I'd make to the old article. V&A East Storehouse is not a normal museum. It is a working store where you can wander around objects that would normally sit behind the scenes, watch conservation work and move between art, fashion, performance and design without following a prescribed route. It is free and open daily. On Thursdays and Saturdays it stays open until 10pm.

The David Bowie Centre is now here too, with rotating displays drawn from an archive of more than 80,000 items. Access to that specific space needs a ticket, while the wider Storehouse remains free. This is much better for a first date than trying to complete a giant museum. Wander. Find something weird. Show it to each other. Leave when you've had enough.

2. Play the strangest arcade machines in London

Novelty Automation

Holborn · Holborn · inexpensive · fully indoors

Forget another neon arcade bar. Novelty Automation is a tiny collection of handmade satirical arcade machines near Holborn. They look vaguely like old coin-operated games, except the humour is very British and the machines are deliberately strange.

The venue itself literally describes its First Thursday evening as “ideal for a first date”, which saves us having to make the argument. It is normally open every day except Monday, with later opening on Thursdays. This works because there is almost no pressure to perform socially. You are constantly reacting to something ridiculous.

3. Go underground at London Mithraeum

City of London · Bank / Cannon Street · free · fully indoors

This is one of London's best short first-date plans. Seven metres below the City is a reconstructed Roman temple to Mithras, with Roman objects, low light, sound and a surprisingly atmospheric recreation of the archaeological site.

Entry is free. Booking is recommended but not compulsory. More importantly, it doesn't take half a day. That makes it particularly good for a first date after work in London.

Meet at Bank, spend 30 to 45 minutes underground, then decide whether you want food or a drink. A date having a natural finish is a feature, not a failure.

4. Do one strange house instead of a giant museum

Sir John Soane's Museum

Holborn · Holborn · free · fully indoors

Sir John Soane's Museum survives from the original version because it does something the National Gallery does not.

It feels genuinely strange. The architect filled his house with paintings, architectural fragments, antiquities, models and objects until almost every surface had something on it.

Entry is still free and you can normally walk in Wednesday to Sunday. The museum is small, so there can be a queue when it reaches capacity. That compactness is exactly why it works as a first date. You can actually finish it.

Then, if you're still enjoying each other's company, Holborn, Covent Garden and Soho are all close.

5. See photography in Soho, then decide whether coffee happens

The Photographers' Gallery

Soho · Oxford Circus · £12 advance, free Friday after 5pm · fully indoors

This is the gallery I'd choose over doing yet another giant national collection. The Photographers' Gallery is small enough to work as a one-hour date and central enough that neither person has to build their afternoon around getting there.

As of September 2026, its main programme includes Japanese Women Photographers: From 1950s to Now, while Soho Photography Quarter outside has large-scale work by Mika Ninagawa. The gallery is also free after 5pm on Fridays.

That gives us something current rather than another evergreen “go to Tate Modern” recommendation.

6. Go to Queer Britain in King's Cross

King's Cross · King's Cross St Pancras · pay what you can · fully indoors

Queer Britain is a much better rainy-day date recommendation than another generic museum if it actually matches your interests.

The national LGBTQ+ museum sits in Granary Square and uses a pay-what-you-can model, including free entry if needed. It is open Wednesday to Sunday.

The 2026 displays include stories around Club Kali, the Black Lesbian and Gay Centre, women's liberation music and Justin Fashanu. The current Trans Is Human photography show runs until 29 November.

7. Play one board game at Draughts

Waterloo or Stratford · from £7.50 gaming admission · fully indoors

Board games work because conversation is allowed to stop. Draughts has more than 1,000 games across its Waterloo and Stratford locations. Gaming admission starts at £7.50 off-peak and staff can recommend something if neither of you knows what to choose.

The important word is one. Do not pick a game that takes 40 minutes to explain and has a geopolitical map. Ask for something simple for two people.

8. Make BFI Southbank more than just “cinema”

Cinema is a bad first date when the entire plan is sitting silently next to someone you've never met. BFI Southbank solves that better than most cinemas because the building gives you a plan around the film.

There is a café, bar, library and free Mediatheque, alongside four screens showing repertory, independent and new cinema. If you're 16 to 25, regular film tickets are currently £4. Meet early. Have coffee. See something you actually chose together.

Then decide whether you want the post-film conversation. The 2026 BFI London Film Festival also runs from 7 to 18 October, so autumn gives you considerably more choice than a standard multiplex schedule.

9. Use Barbican Conservatory when the dates actually line up

The Barbican Conservatory is good. The internet just recommends it as though you can stroll in whenever you feel like it. You cannot.

Public openings happen only on selected dates, and free timed tickets are released in advance, with a smaller batch released on the day.

If your date lines up with an opening, it is excellent: tropical plants, brutalist architecture and no requirement to make constant conversation. If it doesn't, don't force it.

The Barbican's foyers are themselves free and open daily, with exhibitions and installations changing through the year. That makes the wider complex a useful rainy-day option even when the Conservatory is closed.

10. Use V&A South Kensington strategically

Yes, the V&A is obvious.

It stays because it is useful. The mistake is treating “go to the V&A” as the date. Instead, agree on one section. Fashion. Jewellery. Ceramics. Photography. Whatever actually sounds interesting.

General admission remains free, and the museum stays open later on Fridays. Then leave.

11. Do a rainy Soho date without committing to an activity bar

A rainy first date does not always need “competitive socialising”. Soho works because you can combine one small indoor thing with coffee.

The Photographers' Gallery is the obvious anchor, but the date can just as easily be a bookshop, dessert or one coffee somewhere that gives you room to decide what happens next.

12. Let Stratford be the rainy-day backup people forget about

East London now has an unusually strong indoor cluster. V&A East Storehouse is free. The new V&A East Museum is also free and stays open until 10pm on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Draughts has a Stratford branch. And if the rain does stop, Hackney Wick and the Olympic Park give you somewhere to move rather than immediately getting back on the Tube.

This makes Stratford much more useful for a rainy first date in 2026 than many older London date guides suggest.

The Photographers' Gallery, a BFI screening or a more structured activity date gives you something planned without turning the evening into an expensive commitment. For a first date, I would rarely spend much more unless both people specifically want the activity.

If you're nervous: London Mithraeum or a small gallery.

If you hate sitting still: Novelty Automation or Draughts.

If you want to actually talk: Sir John Soane's Museum or Queer Britain, then coffee.

If you're into film: BFI Southbank.

If you're meeting after work: Photographers' Gallery, London Mithraeum or V&A East on a late-opening night.

If you're in East London: V&A East Storehouse.

If you want something romantic without trying too hard: Barbican Conservatory, but only when it is genuinely open.

What is the best rainy-day first date in London?

For someone you've never met before, I'd choose London Mithraeum, The Photographers' Gallery or V&A East Storehouse.

All three are public. None requires a whole evening. And all three give you something to react to besides each other's Hinge biographies.

If you want something more playful, choose Novelty Automation or Draughts.

The point isn't to find the most impressive indoor date in London.

It's to choose somewhere that still works if you discover after 45 minutes that you have absolutely nothing in common.

Don't cancel just because London is wet

You do not need to redesign the whole date. And if the date does go well, don't spend the next three days trying to calculate the perfect follow-up.
