Things to Do in London This Autumn 2026: Events Worth Making Plans Around

Autumn in London has a habit of looking effortless from the outside. Everyone suddenly seems to have a film festival ticket, a gallery plan, a friend who knows about an open building, or a “quick thing by the river” that somehow turns into a whole Sunday.

Then you open an events guide and it gives you 100 options. Useful, technically. But also not useful at all.

Because most people are not really asking, “What events exist in London this autumn?” They are asking, “What can I invite someone to without it being awkward, expensive, too loud, too long, or secretly a terrible first plan?”

That is the version this guide is built for.

Some of these events are good for a first date. Some are better for new friends. Some are not especially good for talking, but they are good if you want a proper night out and a reason to leave the house. The point is not to complete autumn. The point is to pick one thing you would actually go to.

Best plans at a glance

For an easy September plan, start with Open House Festival or London Design Festival. They both have that useful first-meet quality: you can pick one building, one installation or one tiny route, and nobody has to pretend they wanted a three-hour commitment.

If food makes the invite easier, celebrASIA at Battersea Power Station is a strong weekend option. It feels more casual than dinner, and there is enough going on that the plan does not depend entirely on two people generating sparkling conversation on command.

For October, BFI London Film Festival is the obvious indoor choice. I would not make the film the whole plan, though. Meet before, watch the screening, then leave a little space after for the “so… what did we think?” part.

If you want something seasonal, Halloween at Kew is the most straightforward October evening plan. It is not cheap, and it needs booking, but walking through a trail is still easier than sitting across a table trying to decide whether the silence is romantic or terminal.

For November, EFG London Jazz Festival is the one to look at if you want a proper night out. Choose the show carefully. A smaller venue or earlier set is a very different plan from a huge concert where your entire conversation becomes “WHAT?” and thumbs up.

And for something free, old-school and very London, Lord Mayor’s Show is hard to beat. It is loud, odd and not subtle, but sometimes that is exactly what a Saturday plan needs.

Totally Thames is one of those events that can either become a lovely riverside plan or a vague sentence that means nothing. “Let’s do Totally Thames” is not a plan. “Let’s see this thing near Tower Bridge and walk after” is.

That is the difference. For a first meet, choose one section of the river and keep it simple. South Bank is easy. Greenwich gives you more of a day out. Richmond is slower and less central. Tower Bridge works if you want something recognisably London without having to over-explain the invite.

The best use of it is not to chase the whole programme. Pick one walk, one installation, one talk, one performance, one little reason to meet.

Black On The Square

Black On The Square is not the place for a hushed first conversation. It is Trafalgar Square, in the middle of the day, with music, food, performances, workshops and people everywhere.

But that is not a bad thing. For new friends, or a loose group invite, it gives you something to do without making the plan feel heavy. You can turn up for an hour, watch a bit, eat something, and then decide whether to drift towards Covent Garden, Soho or South Bank.

It is also useful if you want a free central plan that does not sound like “shall we just get a drink?” again.

Great River Race

It is probably stronger for new friends and casual dates than for a very serious romantic evening. Which, honestly, is the point.

London Design Festival is one of the best first-meet events of the season, mostly because you can make it as small as you want.

Open House is exactly the kind of London event that sounds more impressive than it needs to be. Doors open. Buildings you normally ignore become interesting. You get to say, “Shall we look inside this place?” and suddenly there is a plan.

It is free, which helps. It is also structured, which helps even more.

The mistake is overbooking it. One building and coffee after is a good meet-up. Three buildings is a themed walk. Anything beyond that is architecture admin.

A film festival is better than a normal cinema date because there is something to talk about afterwards. That does not mean the film should be the whole plan.

Meet before. Have coffee. Watch the film. Then see whether you both want the post-film debrief or whether the polite goodbye arrives faster than the credits.

Frieze is not a casual “let’s just see how we get on” plan. It is bigger, busier and more expensive than that. But if the person is actually into art, it can be brilliant.

I would not choose it for a first meet unless the chat has already made it obvious. For a second date, or a new friend who likes galleries, it has much more to offer than another bar.

Halloween at Kew

EFG London Jazz Festival is one of the better November options because you can control the mood by choosing the right venue.

Free and under £15

Free does not mean low-effort. In London, a free building tour plus coffee can easily be a better first meet than an expensive ticketed thing where neither of you can hear each other.

For lower-cost paid plans, look at smaller festival talks, selected food events, early screenings, or one-off workshops. Just check the official page before you invite someone, because London has a way of turning “cheap plan” into “booking fee plus service fee plus why am I like this?”

Easy first-meet plans

If you are meeting someone for the first time, the safest autumn plans are short, public and easy to leave after 45–90 minutes.
